When looking at different engagement rings, you will need to consider the length and width of your finger along with the overall size of your hand against the shape and size of the main stone, and the width and style of the piece itself. It should come as no surprise that different engagement rings flatter different types of fingers. Finding the most flattering ring for your finger (whether it’s long, short, slender or wide) can be a real challenge. The good news is that there’s a style and shape to flatter every finger and every hand. Fortunately, with a small amount of guidance, you shouldn’t need to spend hours trying on pieces in order to narrow down your options.

When looking at different engagement rings, you will need to consider the length and width of your finger along with the overall size of your hand against the shape and size of the main stone, and the width and style of the piece itself. It’s also a good idea to consider your typical nail length and shape – longer nails, for example, lengthen the appearance of your fingers. Of course, your personal style and lifestyle are also important in the decision.

  • Big Knuckles: If you don’t like how your knuckles look, choosing the right ring can actually draw attention away from them. Look at thicker and heavier bands, as these will draw attention to the jewellery instead of the middle of your finger.
  • Large Hands: If you have larger hands, feel free to try larger rings that suit your personality – you have a lot of room to get creative, after all. With larger hands, you’ll find that it’s much easier to get away with bulkier and chunkier styles that those with small hands can’t wear.
  • Long Fingers: Most styles will work nicely when it comes to long fingers, but princess cut and round stones will be especially flattering. Wider bands tend to also be complementary choice. Long fingers can also carry a bold style with ease, but only if this suits you.
  • Short Fingers: No matter their width, the objective of choosing a ring for short fingers is to elongate them. Oval, pear or marquise stones are great for lengthening, as are rectangular and emerald stones (providing they aren’t too big). Slender, narrow bands also create an illusion of length.
  • Small Hands: If you have small hands, it’s best to keep the overall proportion of your ring small. Pieces that are too big tend to look out of place and heavy. You will find that small round, princess cut, oval or heart shaped stones work especially well with small hands.
  • Slender Fingers: When choosing a ring for slender fingers, the key consideration to keep in mind is not to overpower them. Smaller stones and thicker bands can make thin fingers appear wider to some people, this is a good thing; to others, this is a bad thing.
  • Wide Fingers: To avoid your fingers looking even wider, you should find a style that doesn’t show too much skin either side of the ring. Opt for a wide oval, marquise, rectangular or emerald stone; cluster styles are really flattering; and choose a medium to thick band.
